Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
